Peru Earthquake Kills One, Injures Dozens
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Peru on Sunday, killing one person and injuring 36 others, according to officials.
The tremor, which occurred shortly before noon, was centred about 30 kilometres from Callao, a port city near the capital, Lima.
Peru’s National Seismological Centre confirmed the magnitude, while the US Geological Survey reported it as 5.6.
A man was killed in Lima after a wall collapsed onto his car, the National Police reported.
Emergency authorities also confirmed that 36 people sustained injuries across the capital.
President Dina Boluarte urged calm, assuring the public that the quake had not triggered a tsunami alert along Peru’s Pacific coast.
Television footage from Latina showed landslides in different parts of Lima. The tremor also led to the suspension of a major football match and disrupted subway services in the city.
Peru, located on the Pacific’s Ring of Fire, experiences frequent seismic activity. The country records over 100 noticeable earthquakes annually. The last major quake in 2021, with a magnitude of 7.5, injured 12 people and destroyed over 70 homes in the Amazon region.
The deadliest quake in Peru’s history occurred in 1970 in Ancash, killing around 67,000 people.
