Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has vowed that the Nigerian Army will bring to justice those responsible for the recent killings in Benue, Plateau, and other parts of the country.

Speaking on Saturday in Akure during a media chat organised by the Department of Civil-Military Affairs, Nigerian Army Headquarters, Oluyede, represented by Major General Obinna Onubogu, said the military is fully committed to ending the violence, particularly in North-Central Nigeria.

He said, “We are out, fully deployed and tackling the menace head-on. In Benue particularly, you will see in the coming weeks, very elaborate security arrangements to ensure that all that is going on there completely stops.”

He added that the president had issued clear directives, and the army would continue operations in Plateau, Benue, Kwara, and other affected states.

Oluyede urged communities and local stakeholders to support the military by sharing timely and credible intelligence.

“The Army cannot be everywhere at once. Nigeria is a vast country but we are not as large in number as many people believe.

“We rely heavily on the support and cooperation of the local population. In some cases, unfortunately, the people are not very helpful, which delays our reaction time. That must change if we are to win this fight together,” he said.

He also appealed to media professionals to verify facts before publication to prevent misinformation and disinformation, especially on social media.

“The social media space is flooded with misinformation, disinformation and outright lies. So, we are appealing to the media practitioners to reach out to us before putting out unverified stories,” he said.

He commended the media for the support so far and expressed hope for deeper collaboration to strengthen national security.
