The North-East region of Nigeria has recorded the lowest school attendance rate among children aged between four and six years, according to the latest data released by the World Bank.
The figures, part of the 2023/2024 report compiled by the global financial institution and seen by TheCable Index, revealed a staggering disparity in early childhood education across the six geo-political zones of the country.
According to the data, while the South-West recorded the highest attendance rate at 97.4 per cent, the North-East trailed behind with a paltry 30.1 per cent.
The South-East followed closely behind the South-West with 95.9 per cent, while the South-South posted 93.4 per cent.
The North-Central region had 61.5 per cent, and the North-West region stood at 44.4 per cent.
The World Bank stressed the importance of early childhood education, noting that foundational learning in the formative years is critical to cognitive development and future academic success.
Calls have continued to mount for urgent intervention by both the federal and state governments to improve access to basic education, especially in underperforming regions, through improved funding, infrastructure, security, and community engagement.
