Man Executed In Iran For Spying For Israel
Iranian authorities have executed a man accused of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, as the conflict between the two nations entered its 11th day.
The judiciary announced on Monday that Mohammad-Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh was hanged for “intelligence cooperation with the Zionist regime”, referring to Israel.
He was said to have collaborated with Mossad and also with Iran International, a London-based Persian-language broadcaster the Iranian government considers hostile and linked to Israel.
During the 2022 nationwide protests triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody, Iranian authorities labelled the TV channel a “terrorist organisation”.
The execution comes amid heightened tensions, with Iranian officials promising to accelerate the handling of security-related cases. On Sunday, another man, Majid Mosayebi, was also executed after being convicted of working for Mossad.
Judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei said on state television, “Security-related cases, especially those involving support for the usurping regime (Israel) and acting as a fifth column of the enemy, will be handled more swiftly.”
According to rights organisations, including Amnesty International, Iran is the world’s second-highest executioner after China.
