Eight Die As Speeding Commercial Bus Rams Into Truck In Lagos
Eight people were killed and several others injured on Sunday morning when a commercial bus crashed into a DAF truck at Atura Bus Stop, along the Badagry-bound lane in Lagos.
The fatal crash claimed the lives of the bus driver, his conductor, and six other passengers.
Eyewitnesses said the bus was speeding before the driver lost control and slammed into the truck, trapping many of the occupants.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Nigeria Police (Morogbo Division), and soldiers from the 244 Battalion of the Nigerian Army quickly intervened, rescuing eight passengers who sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims were taken to the General Hospital in Badagry for urgent medical attention by the FRSC medical team.
Confirming the incident, LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the commercial bus lost control while navigating at a perilously high speed, leading to a catastrophic collision with a DAF truck.
“The resultant impact was described as cataclysmic, leaving little chance for evasion or survival for several occupants of the bus.”
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who visited the accident scene, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
“This heart-wrenching incident is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for all road users to embrace caution. No journey should end in such tragedy. May the Almighty grant the deceased eternal rest and console those left behind,” he said.
Bakare-Oki also issued a strong warning to commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, urging them to avoid excessive speeding, follow safety protocols, and ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles to prevent needless deaths.
“This regrettable loss of lives could have been avoided if the basic tenets of defensive driving and vehicular safety had been upheld. Speed remains a silent killer on our highways,” he added.
