Gbajabiamila Welcomes ADC Coalition, Says Democracy Needs Opposition
Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has welcomed the recent adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by opposition leaders, describing it as a positive step for Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking after casting his vote during the local government elections in Surulere, Lagos, on Saturday, Gbajabiamila said opposition is crucial to preventing a one-party system and ensuring accountability in governance.
“There has to be some level of opposition in a democracy,” he told reporters at the Elizabeth Fowler Memorial Primary School polling unit.
He stressed that democracy thrives on the presence of vibrant and credible opposition, which acts as a check on the ruling party and promotes public trust in the system.
Despite supporting the idea of an opposition bloc, Gbajabiamila expressed doubt about the effectiveness and future of the ADC-led coalition.
“For whatever the coalition is worth, I am not sure where it will go — that is, if it will go anywhere,” he said.
He, however, maintained that alternative political voices were essential for national growth and maturity.
Gbajabiamila also praised the peaceful conduct of the local elections and urged Nigerians to engage more actively in grassroots politics, which he described as the foundation of good governance.
He called on political actors to prioritise national unity above personal ambition, regardless of party affiliation.
