Garba Shehu Counters Adesina On Buhari’s Foreign Medical Trips

Garba Shehu, former media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has disagreed with his ex-colleague, Femi Adesina, over reasons for Buhari’s frequent medical trips abroad.

Shehu, speaking on Channels Television’s programme Inside Sources, said the trips were based on personal preference and a long-standing medical relationship overseas, not because Nigerian hospitals lacked the capacity to treat the former President.

He stressed that Buhari remained under the care of Nigerian doctors throughout his tenure.

“I think it is wrong to assume that he fenced himself off from the Nigerian medical system. He had a Nigerian doctor — a chief personal physician — and a State House Clinic, also led by a medical consultant, a distinguished doctor of many years of practice,” Shehu said.

His comments counter Adesina’s earlier statement that Buhari would have died long ago if he had relied on Nigerian hospitals, citing their lack of expertise.

Shehu emphasised that Buhari’s Nigerian medical team was always available to meet his immediate health needs while also noting that Nigerian-trained doctors are globally recognised for their competence.
