The speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr Adewale Egbedun has reacted to the claim by the Alasi of Asi, Oba Isaac Oyewale, claiming that the lawmaker was after his life.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that Oba Oyewale had, in a petition to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone XI, through his counsel, Chief K.E Ngwoke, alleged that Egbedun had threatened to kill him if he set foot in the town.

Also, OSUN DEFENDER listened to a leaked audio where a man who identified himself as Speaker Egbedun threatened to beat, remove, and remand the monarch.

The man in the audio was speaking to a woman who was identified as one of the wives of the monarch, Olori Idowu Oyewale.

But reacting to the allegations, the lawmaker said it was indeed the monarch who had been making a series of threats to him.

Egbedun, in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Thursday, claimed he received, on numerous occasions, threatening phone calls from the Alasi over the case of a suspected hoodlum who was arrested for attacking his convoy.

According to the speaker, the issue between him and the monarch started when he moved permanently to Asi after his election as the number one lawmaker in the state in order to be closer to his constituents.

Egbedun, however, claimed the monarch was not pleased with the move and perceived him as a threat.

Egbedun said, “The Alasi has perceived me as a threat since my relocation to Asi, where I chose to be closer to my constituents and address their needs directly. This decision fostered a renewed sense of allegiance among the people of Odo Otin towards me, fundamentally shifting the narrative within our community.”

The speaker said his convoy was recently attacked in Okuku, Odo-Otin Local Government, on his way home, adding that security agencies arrested one of the suspects involved in the attack.

He added that since the arrest, he has been receiving threatening calls from the Alasi, instructing him not to allow security operatives to arraign the arrested suspect and directing him to stop the security agencies from arresting others involved in the attack.

The speaker said, “Regrettably, this animosity has manifested itself in a series of alarming and unacceptable actions. Firstly, my convoy was attacked about three weeks ago while returning to Asi at Okuku by thugs. This brazen display of intimidation not only endangered my life but also jeopardised the safety of those travelling with me.

“In light of these events, I was compelled to contact the Commissioner of Police and the Director of DSS, both of whom acted swiftly to apprehend one of the culprits involved in the attack against me.

“I am aware that one of the suspects involved, identified as “Easy”, has been evading justice, while the Department of State Services (DSS) and the anti-kidnapping unit of the Nigerian Police Force are still on his trail.

“Following this assault, I received a threatening phone call from the Alasi, instructing me not to allow security operatives arraign the arrested suspect and directing me to stop them from arresting the others involved. Such threats, directed at me and on some occasions to my security aides, are utterly intolerable and reflect a troubling collusion. The Alasi’s repeated threats of further violence against me are a clear attempt to undermine and intimidate me into silence.”

“However, the Alasi continues to bombard me with threats, demanding the release of the arrested suspect and attempting to influence the course of justice,” he added.

Egbedun reiterated his regard for traditional institutions, adding that, “I have a deep regard for traditional institutions and respect for the elderly, but that will not come at the expense of my life. I have done what a son should do for his father and his community for Oba Oyewale on several occasions, but he seems hell-bent on ending my life.”

Egbedun, who did not confirm if he was the one who threatened the monarch in the leaked audio, however, apologised to his supporters for his emotional outbursts.
