NIS Warns Nigerians Over US Visa Misuse
The Nigeria Immigration Service has warned Nigerians to stop abusing their United States visas, following concerns raised by American authorities.
In a statement on Saturday, the Service’s spokesman, Akinsola Akinlabi, said Nigerians travelling to the US must stick to the purpose they stated in their visa applications.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the general public of concerns raised by the United States Government regarding the misuse of US visas by Nigerians.
“All visa holders are advised to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications,” Akinlabi said.
He explained that US authorities carry out checks beyond entry points and warned that anyone found breaking visa rules — such as overstaying — could face visa cancellation, deportation and a ban from future travel.
Akinlabi also urged Nigerian students in the US to remain in active study programmes and avoid unauthorised withdrawals, saying such actions could lead to visa cancellation.
He added that consular officers reserve the right to deny tourist visas to those suspected of intending to travel for childbirth.
“The NIS will continue to collaborate with the US Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not included in any expanded visa restrictions.
“We are calling on all Nigerian citizens to comply with US visa rules as such conduct is essential to safeguarding legitimate travel opportunities,” he said.
