Edo Civil Servant Convicted For Receiving Double Salaries
A High Court sitting in Benin has convicted a civil servant, Mr Ewere Morgan Eseosa, for fraudulently collecting salaries from two government agencies.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said Eseosa was on the payroll of the University of Benin and Ikpoba Okha Local Government Council at the same time, between September 2018 and February 2021.
He allegedly earned a total of ₦1,328,255.47 during the period, in breach of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.
ICPC dragged him before the Edo State High Court on a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and cheating, contrary to Sections 419 and 421 of the Criminal Code Act 2004.
However, the charges were amended to one following a plea bargain agreement, and the defendant pleaded guilty.
Justice Williams Aziegbemhin sentenced him to one year in prison or a fine of ₦150,000.
He was also ordered to refund the sum of ₦1,328,255.47 to the Federal Government through the ICPC Recovery Account.
ICPC said the conviction reflects its resolve to tackle corruption and ensure accountability in public service.
