NYSC DG Absent as Protesters Storm Office Over Seizure Of Corps Member’s Certificate For Criticising Tinubu
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was absent on Tuesday as human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, led protesters to the agency’s Abuja headquarters over the alleged seizure of corps member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, also known as “Raye,”’s discharge certificate for criticising President Bola Tinubu.
Sowore was joined by other activists, including human rights lawyer and Raye’s legal representative, Inibehe Effiong, and leaders of the Take It Back Movement.
In a Facebook post, Sowore said the protesters marched to the sixth floor offices of the NYSC Director-General, who was absent at the time.
“In his absence, Barrister Inibehe delivered a strongly worded legal advisory, warning the DG to refrain from illegally withholding Raye’s Discharge Certificate,” he wrote.
According to him, the NYSC DG has been given seven days to release the certificate or face a mass protest.
“We remain resolute because her fight is our fight, and we will not stop until justice is done,” he added.
Raye had earlier accused NYSC of seizing her certificate over her criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s government.
However, NYSC denied the allegation, stating that her certificate was withheld because she failed to attend the mandatory April 2025 biometric clearance.
In a statement on Sunday, the corps management said Rita’s service year was extended by two months in line with NYSC Bye-Laws and that she was among 131 corps members affected for “valid disciplinary reasons.”
“It is important to note that this extension is a standard procedure and not unique to her case, and the principle of equal treatment was only applied in this case,” the statement read.
