Hoodlums Beat 27-Year-Old Man To Death In Delta Over Alleged Theft
A 27-year-old labourer at the Federal Polytechnic, Orogun in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Joseph Anighoro Ikana, has been beaten to death by suspected hoodlums.
Ikana was accused of selling an electric socket that was being installed in the institution.
He was reportedly tortured overnight on Thursday and later coughed blood before giving up the ghost on Friday.
Despite the allegations, no stolen socket was found in his possession.
His remains have been deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ughelli by the police.
Reacting to the incident, the Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Human Rights, Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo, condemned the killing, describing it as injustice that must not go unpunished.
Ejumudo charged the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Orogun to arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.
He further called on the Ughelli Council Chairman, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, and the lawmaker representing Ughelli North Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Omonade Matthew, to ensure the case is not swept under the carpet.
He appealed to the youths of Orogun community to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing that the police must be allowed to investigate and prosecute the culprits.
