2027: Jonathan, Obi, Makinde Considered For PDP Presidential Ticket – Abba Moro
Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has revealed that former President Goodluck Jonathan, ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are among the Southerners being considered as possible presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027.
Speaking on AIT’s programme Focus Nigeria, Moro explained that the party had zoned the presidential ticket to the South, creating an opportunity for several prominent figures.
He said, “Some names have been thrown up now that the position has been zoned to the South and all the names have been members of the PDP. Peter Obi because of the perceived unfair treatment of not zoning the position of the president to the South and possibly to the Southeast left PDP. And now the PDP has zoned the position to the South.
“And so Peter Obi, you are from the South, left PDP because of the perceived injustice and unfair treatment, now that the thing has been zoned to the South you are welcome to join the race.
“The former president, Goodluck Jonathan, is a bona fide and eminent member of PDP, a statesman per se has been mentioned. Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has also been mentioned.”
Moro stressed that more names would still surface as consultations continue.
He added, “I can assure you that going forward, many more names are going to be mentioned because I insist that PDP as a grassroots political party has many qualified Nigerians from the South that can give a shot at the presidency.
“So let’s watch and see, persuasions are on, contacts are being made, at the end of the day, we will find out who is in the running and we will present a candidate that will give the ruling party a run for its money.
“I’m very sure that those people who moved to the ADC especially from the South felt short-changed by the 2022 zoning of the party – throwing the position open, which created some problems for the party, problems that the PDP is trying to find a solution to.”
