‘We Were Duped’: Ondo Youths Protest After Being Issued Fake Appointment Letters
Some youths in Ondo State who applied for jobs under the state’s Teaching Service Commission on Friday staged a peaceful protest in Akure after allegedly being issued fake appointment letters by unknown officials.
The aggrieved applicants, chanting solidarity songs, converged on the entrance of the governor’s office to demand urgent intervention.
They claimed to have followed the official recruitment process but were denied entry into the final stage when officials discovered that their appointment letters were fake.
It was learnt that the state government had recently embarked on a recruitment exercise for teachers into primary and secondary schools across the 18 local government areas of Ondo. However, the protesters said they were shut out at the capturing stage of the process.
One of the protesters, who gave his name simply as Ola, narrated their ordeal. “We applied for the teaching jobs and letters were issued to us, but we were denied at the point of capturing. They said we do not have genuine appointment letters. We want to appeal to the governor to intervene in this matter,” he said.
Confirming the development, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ebenezer Adeniyan, disclosed that the protesters had been duped by scammers.
“People should please note that those who protested are not teachers but applicants who were duped by some individuals during the recruitment process. They all paid money to scammers who issued them fake letters of appointment. Those legitimately recruited by the government have been absorbed and have started working,” Adeniyan explained.
