State Police: Govs Can’t Be Trusted With Power To Control AK-47 Rifles – Lawmaker
The lawmaker representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency of Plateau State in the House of Representatives, Yusuf Gagdi, has differed with calls for state police.
Gagdi, who is the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, while featuring on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television on Tuesday, warned that governors cannot be trusted with the control of policing in the states.
He reiterated that community policing was more effective, adding that giving governors control would worsen insecurity.
The lawmaker, however, explained that properly funded community policing remained a safer alternative to state police.
“I am not an advocate of state policing. This is because governors cannot be trusted with power to control AK-47 rifles.
“I support community policing,” he said.
