Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has explained why he was unable to take decisive action to resolve the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, Atiku said he could not implement reforms because he was neither the party’s National Chairman nor its National Secretary.

He added that the officials occupying those positions did not listen to him, leaving him powerless to fix the party.

“The people occupying those positions have different interests that are mostly personal to them,” he said.

The PDP crisis began in 2022, ahead of the 2023 presidential election, when the party zoned its ticket to the North.

Atiku, also from the North, emerged as the party’s candidate, a development that upset some party chieftains.

The unresolved tensions eventually prompted Atiku and other members to leave PDP for the opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He further accused the APC-led government of sponsoring individuals to destabilise the PDP.

“I could have taken firm decisions to fix the party if I was the chairman or secretary, or if someone who listened to me held those positions,” Atiku said.
