Doctors Remove 29 Spoons, 19 Toothbrushes From Man’s Stomach
Doctors at Devnandani Hospital were left shocked after removing 50 foreign objects, including 29 spoons and 19 toothbrushes, from the stomach of a 40-year-old man in Hapur, India.
The man was rushed to the hospital on September 17 by his family, who said he had been suffering from severe pain, vomiting and weakness. Scans later revealed dozens of metallic and plastic items inside his stomach.
A five-hour operation led by Dr. Shyam Kumar successfully removed 29 spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two pens. “When we performed the ultrasound, X-ray and CT scan, we were stunned to see metallic and plastic objects inside his stomach. I have never seen so many foreign bodies in one patient,” Dr. Kumar told reporters.
Officials disclosed that the man had a history of substance abuse and was admitted to a de-addiction centre in Ghaziabad a month earlier.
Angered by being left at the centre, he reportedly began swallowing everyday objects in protest. Speaking after surgery, the patient admitted, “I would pick them up and go to the washroom to swallow them.”
Dr. Kumar explained that many of the items had been broken before ingestion. “There were about 28 spoon parts, along with 21 head-less brush parts and two pens,” he said. Medical experts suggested that his behaviour might be linked to a psychiatric condition such as pica disorder, in which people compulsively eat non-food items.
