IPAC Calls For Independent Panel To Appoint INEC Chairman

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has called for the removal of the power to appoint the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from the office of the President.

IPAC called for the establishment of an independent committee to handle such appointments.

IPAC President, Dr. Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, made the call during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Review in Abuja.

According to him, the current system, which gives the President the authority to appoint the INEC Chairman, could undermine public trust in the electoral body.

“To ensure the integrity of INEC, this power must be taken away from the President. There should be a committee comprising representatives of political parties, civil society groups, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the National Assembly to select the INEC Chairman,” Dantalle said.

He added that such a reform would promote fairness and transparency in elections, especially in light of recurring complaints about the conduct of past polls.
