Tim Godfrey Criticises Unfair Treatment Of Gospel Artises, Recalls Being Paid With Yams, Chicken
Nigerian gospel singer Tim Godfrey has criticised the treatment of gospel artistes in the country, recalling how he was once paid with two bars of yams and a live chicken for a performance.
In a video that went viral on Thursday, Godfrey expressed frustration over what he described as the undervaluation of gospel artistes by event organisers and audiences.
“Coming to Nigeria became difficult because of how artists are being treated so badly. All those questions like ‘why are they charging?’ or ‘why are they collecting money?’ really upset me. I have collected two bars of yam as honorarium. I have collected a full, alive, living chicken as honorarium. And I’m expected to use that to pay school fees, house rent, buy property… No! That is so unfair,” he said.
The singer’s comments have sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians agreeing that gospel artistes deserve better financial recognition and respect for their work.
