Four suspects allegedly involved in the murder of the late Chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, Remi Abass, were arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday.

The defendants — Abubakar Kabiru (aka Jeje, 38), Tajudeen Opeyemi (30), Akeem Agbomojo (28), and Akintoye Olayemi (40) — all from Ikire and Apomu in Osun State, appeared before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.

They face charges of terrorism, illegal possession of firearms, and murder, following Abass’s killing on February 17, 2024, in Ikire, Osun State.

The prosecution was represented by A. S. Oyeyemi on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, while Sunday Adebayo appeared for the defendants. Muhydeen Adeoye held a watching brief for the nominal complainants.

The amended charge, numbered FHC/ABJ/CR/170/2025, contains three counts. Count One alleges conspiracy, aiding, and instigation of acts of terrorism across Osun State, contrary to the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Count Two charges the defendants with illegal possession of three pump-action rifles, contrary to the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, 2004. Count Three alleges the murder of Abass, contrary to Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Act, 2004.

All four pleaded not guilty. Justice Abdulmalik ordered them remanded at the Kuje Custodial Centre and adjourned the case to December 4, 2025, for hearing, following an agreement by counsel.

The killing of Abass is linked to political tensions between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over local government control in Osun.

In 2022, APC-led local government elections were conducted just before the end of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s administration, which the PDP boycotted and later challenged in court.

After PDP’s Senator Ademola Adeleke became governor, the councils were dissolved and caretaker committees appointed.

However, in February 2025, the Court of Appeal delivered a controversial judgement, sparking clashes between rival political supporters in several LGAs, including Irewole, resulting in Abass’s death.

An earlier case involving seven suspects, led by Jide Jooda, was withdrawn after one of the accused died while awaiting trial.

The matter is now scheduled to resume on December 4, 2025.
