Victor Boniface Struggling Over Excess Weight – Werder Bremen Coach
Nigerian striker Victor Boniface is reportedly struggling to adapt at his new club, Werder Bremen, due to excess weight.
The forward, who played a key role in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2024 league title triumph, has yet to find his rhythm since joining Bremen.
According to the club’s sporting director, Clemens Fritz, who spoke to BILD, Boniface’s current form is being affected by his physical condition.
Boniface scored 21 goals and provided 10 assists in 34 matches under Xabi Alonso last season, helping Leverkusen secure their first-ever Bundesliga title.
Although his numbers dipped the following season, he remained an important player for the club with 11 goals in 27 appearances before a summer transfer became inevitable.
The move, however, was far from smooth. A proposed switch to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr collapsed after he reportedly failed a medical, while a subsequent deal with AC Milan also fell through.
He eventually joined Werder Bremen on loan but has managed only four appearances so far.
Fritz explained that the club has identified the problem and is working with Boniface to help him regain full fitness.
“We’ve clearly identified the issues together with Victor and are supporting him in every way possible,” he said.
“He accepts our support and wants to work on himself, with extra training, physiotherapy, and a modified nutrition plan. We’re working closely with him.”
