“Enough Of Blood And Tears” – OAU Students Cry Out Over Persistent Robberies, Ask Adeleke To Intervene

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have raised alarm over the persistent case of armed robberies, targeting the university’s students’ environment.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Great Ife Students’ Representative Council (SRC), the Students’ Union lamented that the once peaceful student environment has been thrown into fear and uncertainty due to incessant attacks by robbers, particularly in off-campus hostels.
According to the SRC, the latest incident occurred on Monday night at Oreoluwa Hostel, Moremi Estate, where several students were reportedly attacked, injured, and dispossessed of their valuables by the robbers.
“This is not an isolated event — it is a continuation of a frightening trend that has persisted for far too long while those responsible for protecting lives and property fold their arms in shameful silence,” the statement read.
The union expressed discontentment at the inaction of security agencies and the Osun State Government, accusing authorities of neglecting the safety of students despite the huge security votes allocated to the state every month.
“If these funds are truly being used for security, then where is the security?” the SRC queried, describing the situation as a wake-up call to conscience and responsibility.
“Our safety must no longer be treated as a favour, it is our right,” the union declared.
Describing the situation as a reign of terror that has left many traumatized and unsafe, the union urgec the university management to prioritise bringing more students back to campus by building on-campus hostels.
“The long-term solution lies in bringing more students back on campus, safety cannot be guaranteed when thousands of students are forced to live outside campus,” the union said.
