Tinubu To Swear In Prof. Amupitan As New INEC Chairman Today
President Bola Tinubu will today (Thursday) officially swear in Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at 12:00 noon inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. It is expected to be witnessed by members of the Federal Executive Council, leaders of the National Assembly, legal luminaries, civil society representatives, and senior officials of INEC.
A presidential aide, who confirmed the development, disclosed that preparations for the event have been concluded. “We’re preparing. It’s going to hold tomorrow (Thursday)… around 12:00 pm or 1 o’clock,” the aide told PUNCH.
Shortly after the inauguration, Professor Amupitan is expected to hold his first official meeting with directors of the electoral commission at INEC headquarters, Abuja, by 1:30 p.m.
According to a notice signed by the Deputy Director of Publicity at INEC, Wilfred Ifogah, members of the INEC Press Corps have been invited to cover the opening ceremony of the meeting.
President Tinubu had earlier explained that Amupitan’s nomination was based on his integrity, apolitical disposition, and proven record of service.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President noted that Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and academic from Kogi State, is the first person from the North-Central region to occupy the position of INEC Chairman.
The National Council of State and the Senate had earlier endorsed and confirmed his nomination on October 16, 2025, following the completion of tenure by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman from 2015 to October 2025.
