Agbakoba Backs Tinubu’s Decision to Replace Service Chiefs Amid Coup Rumour
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Olisa Agbakoba, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to reshuffle the leadership of the Armed Forces, describing it as a timely and sensible move.
Tinubu had on Friday announced a major shake-up in the military, appointing new service chiefs in what the Presidency described as part of efforts to strengthen national security.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Agbakoba said the president acted wisely, especially in light of reports suggesting an attempted coup, which allegedly led to the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary celebration on October 1.
Although the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) dismissed the coup reports, Agbakoba maintained that Tinubu’s swift action reflected the kind of decisiveness missing in the previous administration.
“You have a president who is prepared to take tough decisions, and we know that he likes to take tough decisions,” he said. “I think he has done the right thing because his predecessor, the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, did not like to make such decisions and allowed his military team to stay far longer than they should have.”
The former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president added that the timing of the move was appropriate.
“So, if it is indeed true that there was a rumoured coup, I think he acted sensibly by doing exactly what he has done. What we want to see now is the impact of that decision,” he said.
