Kidnapped Woman Freed After Two Weeks Amid Alleged Police Inaction
Wahab Aisha, abducted two weeks ago at Igbira Camp in Auchi, Edo State, has regained her freedom, but concerns have emerged over the alleged refusal of Edo State authorities and the Nigerian Police to support external rescue efforts.
Her release was confirmed on Saturday by activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who expressed relief at her freedom but frustration over the lack of government collaboration.
“Thankfully, she regained her freedom last night. Sadly, we couldn’t move in to capture her abductors because the State security agencies and the Edo State government have repeatedly failed to respond to our calls for collaboration,” he said.
Gwamnishu revealed that Aisha was abducted in Auchi and released in Okpella, Etsako West Local Government Area, after being forced to trek long distances with her captors.
He added that certain technical equipment crucial for the rescue could not be deployed without official authorisation, which was not granted despite repeated attempts to contact the Edo State Government and the Commissioner of Police.
“To everyone who stood by Aisha’s family during this difficult time, thank you sincerely. Security requires partnership — between citizens, Government, and volunteers like us. We remain ready to assist, but we cannot do it alone,” he said, urging the government to strengthen collaboration with volunteer groups and law enforcement to tackle rising kidnappings.
