WASSCE 2026: We Didn’t Mandate Specific Subjects for Candidates – WAEC
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports claiming that it directed senior secondary school students to take specific subjects in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement issued by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, the Council described the reports as baseless and misleading.
“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” Adeshina said.
She explained that the development and regulation of school curricula in Nigeria are the responsibility of the Federal Government, while WAEC’s role is to implement government policies through examinations and assessments.
“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government. WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” she stated.
WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and fairness, assuring that all candidates sitting for the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates will be given equal opportunities.
The Council urged schools, students, and the general public to disregard the false reports and rely only on official communications from WAEC for accurate examination information.
