Five people were killed and two others injured in a road accident on Thursday in Ondo State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.

FRSC Ondo State Sector Commander, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, said the accident occurred at about 9:10 a.m. at Oyin Junction, after Ilu-Abo in Akure North Local Government Area.

He explained that a Nissan Sunny car collided with a Tipper, DAF model 202345, resulting in the deaths of one adult male, three adult females, and one female child.

The injured victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo.

“Seven people were involved and five killed, which comprises one male adult, three female adults and one female child, while two were injured. Meanwhile, the bodies of the victims have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, by our personnel from the Owo Unit Command,” he said.

Dr Ibitoye attributed the crash to speeding and urged motorists to adopt defensive driving, particularly during the ember months.

“It is becoming too much. We have been engaging tipper drivers, and we will continue to engage them. Basically, they should take care of their vehicles to avoid mechanical fault-related crashes on the road.

“For other motorists, if you observe that any vehicle is misbehaving in front of you or around you as you are driving, please give way, let the person go or park somewhere to avoid crashes.

“Especially during these ember months, everybody is on the road, and the road is busy. People should abide by driving techniques so that you can assist yourself and others using the road for national development,” he said.

He further called on drivers to exercise caution and maintain their vehicles to prevent similar incidents.
