Reps Probe Illegal Deductions, Multiple Bank Charges Nationwide
The House of Representatives has inaugurated an ad hoc committee to investigate alleged illegal deductions from civil servants’ salaries and multiple bank charges imposed on customers across Nigeria.
Speaking at the committee’s inauguration in Abuja, Chairman Hon. Kelechi Nwogu said the probe follows increasing complaints from Nigerians over arbitrary and unexplained deductions by government agencies and financial institutions.
“This investigation is crucial for ensuring transparency, fairness, and accountability in Nigeria’s financial system,” Nwogu said, noting that the committee will examine taxes, levies, and other deductions affecting workers, including possible non-remittance of deducted funds.
The committee will also scrutinise a wide range of bank charges, including VAT applied to existing fees, to identify irregularities and recommend reforms that protect citizens’ rights.
Nwogu urged banks, MDAs, regulators, and civil society groups to cooperate with the committee, promising that its findings will lead to meaningful reforms.
He praised Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and the 10th Assembly for establishing the committee, describing the assignment as a matter of national importance.
Represented by Chief Whip Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, Abbas said the probe reflects the House’s commitment to protecting citizens from financial exploitation.
“Multiple bank charges erode public trust and place undue strain on citizens’ finances. The demands for transparency and fairness in banking require immediate attention,” he added.
Abbas urged the committee to carry out its work with integrity and objectivity, assuring that the House would act on its recommendations to ensure fairness in Nigeria’s financial system.
