Osun Resident Doctors Join Nationwide Strike
Resident doctors in Osun State have joined the indefinite strike declared by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), leading to a suspension of medical services at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
The strike, which began on Saturday, follows the directive of the NARD national leadership after the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government over unmet demands and unfulfilled promises.
Confirming the development, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors, Osun State chapter, Dr. Phillip Ajibade, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the action was in total compliance with the national directive.
“The NARD president was clear. He has directed all NARD members across Nigeria to embark on a total, indefinite, and comprehensive strike. ARD UTH Osogbo is an affiliate of NARD, and we have complied,” Ajibade stated.
He explained that the grievances that led to the national strike also affect doctors in Osun State, noting that the action was necessary to press home their collective demands.
“Our members are equally affected by the same challenges NARD is fighting against poor welfare, unfavorable working conditions, and the government’s failure to implement previously agreed terms,” he added.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the National President of NARD, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, said the strike became inevitable after several unsuccessful meetings with government representatives and the failure of the Federal Government to meet the association’s demands.
Suleiman noted that the association had given the government sufficient time to address issues affecting resident doctors, including better conditions of service, payment of outstanding allowances, and improved healthcare infrastructure, but the promises were not fulfilled.
The nationwide strike has already begun to disrupt medical services in many government hospitals, leaving patients stranded and raising concerns about the impact on healthcare delivery across the country.
