Presidency Denies Reports of Tinubu Meeting US Vice President
The Presidency has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to meet United States Vice President J.D. Vance at the White House on Tuesday.
Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, described the report as false and misleading in a post on X on Monday.
The clarification follows recent threats by US President Donald Trump, who warned of possible military action against Nigeria over alleged persecution and killings of Christians, and had also designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern.
Trump cited ongoing violence against Christians and the government’s failure to protect religious minorities.
The Nigerian government, however, strongly denied any persecution of religious groups.
Addressing the report on Tinubu’s visit, the Presidency said it was fueling unnecessary speculation and uninformed commentary about the President’s diplomatic schedule.
Ajayi emphasised that if Tinubu were to visit the White House, he would meet with the US President, not the Vice President.
He wrote, “There is a Sahara Reporters story that President Tinubu is going to the US on Tuesday to see US Vice President J.D Vance. That story is not true. I can see that the fake news by Sahara has become the basis for some uninformed commentaries since yesterday. If President Tinubu is going to the White House, he won’t be going to see a Vice President.”
