We’re Tackling Trump’s Threat Through Multiple Approaches – Information Minister
The Federal Government is employing multiple diplomatic and domestic strategies to address recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump concerning Nigeria, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said.
Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, Idris assured that the President remains calm and focused while the government takes concrete steps to clarify Nigeria’s efforts in tackling insecurity and promoting religious harmony.
“Channels of communication have been opened with international organisations to explain what Nigeria has done, and what more we intend to do, to address both domestic and international concerns,” Idris said.
He added that President Tinubu has been meeting religious leaders from different faiths to strengthen unity and understanding.
“The President will continue to engage with religious groups, regional and continental bodies, and international partners to ensure that Nigeria defeats criminal elements who are distorting the country’s image,” Idris stated.
The Minister dismissed claims that Nigeria is intolerant of religious diversity as “absolutely false,” stressing that the country is home to Muslims, Christians, and followers of other faiths, with constitutional guarantees for freedom of religion.
“Nowhere in Nigeria has there been any policy or action that favours one religion over another. What we are dealing with are extremists trying to divide the country and create a false narrative,” Idris said.
He urged Nigerians to remain united and avoid statements that could deepen divisions.
“This is a time for reflection on our nationhood and unity. The President is calm but treating this matter with utmost seriousness. Every relevant agency is addressing it thoroughly, and we are confident that Nigeria will emerge stronger,” he added.
