Mexico’s President to Sue Man Who Groped Her in Public
Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, has vowed to press charges against a man who groped her during a public event in Mexico City.
The incident occurred on Tuesday near the National Palace, where Sheinbaum was greeting supporters.
A viral video shows the man approaching her from behind, attempting to kiss her on the neck and touch her inappropriately before she pulled away. Security officials quickly intervened and detained the suspect, whose identity has not been made public.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Sheinbaum said she decided to take legal action to send a strong message and protect women across the country.
“If I don’t file a complaint, what will happen to other Mexican women? If they do this to the president, what will happen to all women in our country?” she asked.
Sheinbaum recalled facing similar harassment in the past, even before becoming president. “I have experienced it before, when I wasn’t president, when I was just a student,” she said.
The president added that the man reportedly harassed other women in the crowd, stressing that it was necessary to take a stand against such behaviour.
