President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe, Lagos State, months after the Federal Executive Council imposed a seven-year moratorium on the creation of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced on Thursday that the President had signed the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe (Establishment) Bill, 2025, into law, officially creating the institution.

“It is my honour to announce that the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe (Establishment) Bill, 2025, has been assented to by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Akpabio said.

He explained that the Senate transmitted the authenticated bill to the President, who returned two certified copies bearing his signature, completing the legal process.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who sponsored the bill, said the university would focus on science and technology courses vital to national development. These include Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, and Civil Engineering, as well as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science.

Akpabio also praised President Tinubu for his commitment to expanding access to specialised higher education across Nigeria, describing the approval as a demonstration of his continued investment in the sector.

The approval of the university comes despite the earlier FEC decision, raising questions about the implementation of the seven-year moratorium on new federal institutions.
