Reps Condemn Attack on Niger Lawmaker’s Convoy, Demand Probe
The House of Representatives has condemned the recent attack on the convoy of Rep. Jafaru Mohammed Ali, lawmaker representing Borgu/Agwara Federal Constituency of Niger State.
In a statement issued on Friday by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, the Green Chamber said it received with deep shock the news of the incident, which occurred along the Lumma–Babanna Road on Tuesday while the lawmaker was heading to Babanna for a constituency engagement.
According to the statement, the attack led to the death of some security operatives attached to the lawmaker, while his driver and aides sustained injuries. Several vehicles in the convoy were also damaged.
“The House deeply mourns the brave operatives who paid the supreme price in the line of duty, and extends heartfelt condolences to their families, the relevant security agencies, and the good people of Niger State,” the statement read.
The House also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and called on the nation’s security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and such incidents do not recur.
According to the House, the incident highlighted the urgent need for sustained action against insecurity ravaging some parts of the country.
“This unfortunate incident underscores the urgent need for decisive, coordinated, and sustained action against insecurity across Nigeria’s border regions,” the statement said.
Reiterating its commitment to tackling insecurity, the House pledged to provide all necessary legislative support to the executive and relevant security agencies in the ongoing national efforts to eradicate terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality threatening Nigeria’s peace and stability.
