Turaki Faction Takes Control Of PDP National Secretariat Amidst Pandemonium

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Taminu Turaki, has announced that his faction has taken control of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Turaki made the declaration while speaking to journalists after he, alongside Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, forced their way into the PDP National Executive Committee meeting hall on Tuesday.

The move came amid rising tensions over parallel meetings planned by rival factions of the party.

The National Working Committee (NWC) elected in Ibadan on Saturday, aligned with Turaki, clashed with the faction supported by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, which had also scheduled a meeting at the secretariat. Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary of the pro-Wike faction, arrived at Wadata Plaza with several members but was soon confronted by Turaki’s group.

Turaki warned of a serious threat to democracy and pledged that his faction would defend it at all costs.

“Even if it means that we lay down our lives for democracy to thrive and survive in Nigeria, we are prepared to do that,” he said.

He added that despite the use of tear gas—whose source he questioned—his faction would not be deterred.

“I want to assure you that we have taken over our office and will continue to provide leadership and direction to this party from our national headquarters, Wadata Plaza,” Turaki said.

The crisis in the PDP comes as the party struggles with internal divisions, with both factions claiming legitimacy over the party’s leadership.
