Abia State Governor Alex Otti has assured IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu of continued efforts to secure his release, urging him to remain calm and resolute.

Otti made the pledge during a visit to Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, accompanied by Abia State Attorney General Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN), Kanu’s brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and senior Sokoto State officials, the governor’s spokesman Ferdinand Ekeoma confirmed on Sunday.

According to the statement, the governor told Kanu that initiatives begun over two years ago to resolve his case had been intensified despite recent developments.

The governor was quoted as encouraging the IPOB leader to “remain calm but strong,” adding that the matter “will be resolved administratively” and that Kanu would eventually regain his freedom.

Otti also expressed satisfaction that the Sultan of Sokoto shared his view on the need for Kanu’s release and reducing regional tensions.

Kanu, reportedly in high spirits, thanked the governor, emphasising his interest in good governance and the welfare of the people, while praying for guidance for Otti and his team.

The Abia government noted that Kanu was “all smiles” during the meeting and appreciative of the renewed efforts.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that Kanu was convicted on November 21, 2025, by the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges and sentenced to life imprisonment.

He was subsequently transferred from DSS custody in Abuja to the Sokoto Correctional Facility, a move that has sparked controversy.

In a related development, the Enugu High Court in October 2023 nullified IPOB’s proscription as a terrorist organisation and awarded N8 billion against the South East Governors Forum and the Federal Government.
