Peter Obi Slams Use of Public Funds on Luxury Vehicles for Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned reports that public funds were used to purchase luxury vehicles, including Hilux trucks and Hummer buses, for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 campaign mobilisation.
He described the move as “profoundly insensitive” and “an abuse of public trust.”
In a statement shared on his official X handle on Thursday, Obi said the decision highlights a worrying disconnect between political leaders and the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
“At a time when Nigerians are grappling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity, allocating public resources to distribute luxury vehicles is not only insensitive but a serious moral failure,” he said.
Obi stressed that leaders should prioritise urgent social needs over political displays.
“Leadership in these challenging times should focus on feeding the hungry, providing healthcare for the sick, restoring hope for unemployed youth, and securing our communities. It should not be about parading luxury vehicles or campaigning for votes,” he added.
He lamented that while many Nigerians face deep economic hardship, some leaders continue to flaunt wealth with brand-new Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, and Hummers, turning citizens’ suffering into “mere background for political theatrics.”
Obi pointed out the human cost of the economic crisis, “Children are dropping out of school because families cannot afford tuition. Mothers are dying during childbirth due to lack of basic medical supplies. Insecurity is tearing families apart. And yet, those in power respond by buying and distributing luxury vehicles.”
He called for a shift in governance priorities, urging leaders to demonstrate empathy and accountability.
“Nigeria cannot continue on a path of wastefulness, insensitivity, and misplaced priorities. Our citizens deserve leadership grounded in prudence and responsibility,” Obi said.
Despite the challenges, Obi remained optimistic about Nigeria’s future. “Regardless of how bleak the situation may appear today, I firmly believe that a New Nigeria is not only necessary; it is possible,” he concluded.
