Remi Tinubu Breaks Silence on Viral Controversy With Gov Adeleke at Ooni’s Coronation
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has addressed the growing controversy surrounding her conduct at the 10th-year coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
At the event, where she was also conferred with the title Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua, Mrs Tinubu interrupted Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, asking him to stop singing and proceed with his remarks, a move that has generated mixed reactions across the country.
The incident occurred on Sunday as Governor Adeleke mounted the podium to pay tribute to the Ooni and to acknowledge her new chieftaincy title.
OSUN DEFENDER reported that Governor Adeleke, in his usual style, began singing a gospel song at the point when he was expected to deliver his official address.
Apparently dissatisfied with the delay, the First Lady stood up, approached the governor, and urged him to proceed with his speech, reportedly giving him “five minutes.” She also threatened to take the speech document if he continued singing instead of delivering his address.
The moment has since sparked widespread debate among Nigerians, with many interpreting the First Lady’s action in different ways.
Reacting to the growing backlash, Mrs Tinubu stated on her Facebook page that followers often amplify minor missteps. She made the comment while sharing a photo of herself with the Osun State governor.
“Those entrusted with leadership understand their duties and how to steer the affairs of society. More often, it is the followers and critics who scrutinize every step, amplify minor missteps, and turn them into needless controversy,” she wrote.
Despite her clarification, many Nigerians have continued to condemn her action, with some describing it as a national embarrassment.
