NBA Charges Gov Makinde to Rebuild Oyo Security System
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oyo State Chapter, has urged Governor Seyi Makinde and security agencies in the state to urgently rebuild Oyo’s security architecture to prevent further deterioration.
Chairman of the NBA Ibadan Branch, Mr Ibrahim Lawal, made the call on Thursday during a press conference held at the Afe Babalola NBA House, Ibadan, ahead of the 2025 NBA Ibadan Law Week scheduled to begin next week.
Lawal noted that Oyo State was once regarded as one of the most secure in the country, attributing recent security lapses to what he described as a relaxation in the system.
According to him, “Oyo State used to be the most secure in Nigeria. The security architecture was very tight, but I think the present administration has relaxed, and that’s the effect we are seeing. We can only urge the government to come together, look at the security architecture, and return it to where it was so we can build on it.”
His comments follow the recent kidnapping of Wale Oriade, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, who was abducted in his office by suspected gunmen said to have arrived in a blue Micra vehicle.
Meanwhile, the State Government had, on Wednesday, assured residents of strengthened security measures after an expanded security council meeting presided over by Governor Makinde.
Lawal stressed the urgency of a coordinated response, warning that insecurity was getting “very close” to residents. “We know the security situation is bad. The Federal Government and the military are doing their best, but the State Government must sit down and look for the best solutions. It is getting very close to us. The kidnapping of the lady shows that nobody is safe,” he said.
He also appealed to the state Commissioner of Police to overhaul the security framework, adding: “The Commissioner of Police must rejig the security architecture of the state. We must make sure that lives and property are safe.”
Also speaking, Chairman of the Planning Committee and former state Attorney-General, Oluseun Abimbola (SAN), said the upcoming Law Week would combine professional activities with social engagements, including the reception of newly admitted lawyers.
The 2025 NBA Ibadan Law Week, which runs from Friday, December 12 to Wednesday, December 17, will feature discussions, networking events, and development sessions.
The governor’s recent expanded security council meeting with service commanders, local government chairmen, and traditional rulers indicates the administration’s awareness of rising public concern and its effort to present a robust response.
