Ekiti State Government says it has spent N325 million on victims of rainstorms, flooding and fire disasters in the last one year.

Deputy Governor, Mrs Monisade Afuye, disclosed this while distributing relief materials worth N150 million to the first batch of rainstorm victims in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The materials, provided by the state government for victims affected between March and May 2025, included cash support, planks, nails, iron sheets, bags of cement and other building accessories.

Addressing beneficiaries, Afuye said a total of 1,047 victims across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state would benefit from the government’s intervention programme.

She noted that Governor Biodun Oyebanji had taken proactive steps to reduce disaster occurrences by clearing drainage systems, dredging waterways, intensifying sensitisation campaigns, and establishing Local Emergency Management Committees to boost grassroots response.

The Deputy Governor urged local council chairmen to provide sufficient funding for the newly established committees to strengthen disaster management structures statewide.

“Between last year and now, Governor Oyebanji has assisted victims of fire disasters with over N90 million, apart from the N150 million approved for the March–May 2025 rainstorm victims who are beneficiaries today.

“Mr Governor has also approved an additional N50 million for victims of rainfall incidents recorded between June and October 2025, while another N34 million has been released as cash grants to those whose valuables were recently destroyed by fire,” she said.

Afuye advised residents to avoid keeping combustible materials around their homes and ensure electrical appliances are switched off when not in use, particularly as the harmattan season approaches.
