NLC Commences Protest Against Insecurity in Lagos Despite Tinubu Meeting

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday commenced a protest in Lagos over worsening insecurity across the country, despite a late-night meeting between its leadership and President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

The protest comes barely hours after President Tinubu met with labour leaders to address planned nationwide actions over unresolved demands bordering on workers’ welfare, rising cost of living and security concerns.

Despite the engagement, NLC members were seen early Wednesday blocking major roads in parts of Lagos as they marched to demand urgent government action to end insecurity.

In videos circulating online, protesters were seen singing solidarity songs while displaying placards with bold inscriptions reading: “Federal Government, No More Excuses and Rhetorics! End Insecurity Now.”

Men of the Nigeria Police Force were also present at the protest grounds, monitoring the situation to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Recall that the meeting with President Tinubu was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the President met with the leadership of the NLC alongside the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma; Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo; Governor of Kebbi State, Dr Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

The NLC delegation to the meeting was led by its National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

However, the commencement of the Lagos protest suggests that labour remains dissatisfied with the outcome of the talks, insisting on concrete and immediate actions to address insecurity nationwide.
