In this interview with ABIODUN OGUNRINDE, the Publicity Secretary of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Micheal Ogunsina says Governor Seyi Makinde’s record is unmatched and explains why the party is confident ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The PDP in Oyo State has faced claims of internal division. How are you ensuring unity ahead of the next election?

I can say clearly that Oyo State PDP is united. Across the 351 wards and the 33 local governments, there is no crisis threatening the party. We are deliberate in our engagement at all levels, ensuring party members and supporters are carried along. We are responsible and at the same time, we do not take the love of the people for granted.

What is your reaction to the defection of some PDP members to opposition parties?

Politics is about movement and change. Defection is not new. In fact, some candidates who contested against us in the last election have now joined the PDP. For example, the Oyo North senatorial candidate of the Accord Party and the Oyo Central candidate, Faozy, are now in PDP. Even some key figures from the Ajimobi administration have joined us. So, while some may leave, many others are coming in.

Are you saying there are no aggrieved members within the PDP?

In politics, it is impossible to make everyone happy at the same time. Expectations differ. However, there is no individual who can say he has an issue with the PDP in Oyo State. At worst, there may be unmet expectations, but that does not translate to anger or division within the party.

What is PDP’s realistic path to victory in the next governorship election?

Our pathway to victory is simple. We will campaign on the achievements of Governor Seyi Makinde. Since 2019, his performance speaks for itself. No governor since the creation of Oyo State in 1976 has matched what he has done. By February 3, 2026, during the Oyo@50 celebration, we will showcase these achievements to the world.

Is that alone enough to campaign with?

Absolutely. We have tasted what is delicious; now we are taking what is nutritious. Governor Makinde is nutritious. PDP is nutritious. Oyo State is today one of the safest states in the South and one of the most attractive for economic growth. Under previous administrations, 100 kilometres of roads were not built. Today, over 800 kilometres are completed or ongoing.

Which emerging leaders in your party do you see as future assets?

We have many. I see myself as a future asset. Wasiu Adeleke, Alhaji Akeem Azeez, Sola Adeleke and many others are future assets. PDP has enough brilliant and qualified people to face any opposition.

Who do you view as the potential aspirants as 2027 approaches?

There are many interested individuals, but the party is waiting for INEC to lift the ban on political activities. When that happens, everyone will have an equal opportunity.

Can you mention some of the aspirants?

No, that would be unfair. It is better to wait for INEC to lift the ban so the process can be open and transparent.
