Nigeria Confirms US Airstrikes On Terrorists In Nigeria
The Federal Government has confirmed ongoing security and intelligence collaboration with the United States following airstrikes targeting terrorists in Nigeria’s North West.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on Friday signed by spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the cooperation has resulted in precision strikes on terrorist positions and involves intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and other support, all conducted in line with international law and respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“Nigeria reiterates that all counter-terrorism efforts are guided by the primacy of protecting civilian lives, safeguarding national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity,” the ministry said.
It added that terrorist attacks, whether targeting Christians, Muslims, or other communities, are an affront to Nigeria’s values and international peace.
The statement followed remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said the strikes targeted Islamic State militants in Northwestern Nigeria responsible for attacks on Christians.
“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, warning of further action if the killings continued.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also confirmed Washington acted with Nigeria’s cooperation, expressing gratitude for the country’s support.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria will continue to work with international partners to disrupt terrorist networks, cut off their financing, and prevent cross-border threats.
The airstrikes followed a bomb attack on a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, which killed five people and injured dozens in a suspected suicide bombing.
The ministry assured that updates would be provided through official channels.
