Sokoto State government has confirmed that US airstrikes carried out on Christmas Day targeted terrorist camps in Tangaza Local Government Area.

The late-night operation was said to have focused on ISIS militants in the north-western state.

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) stated that the strikes were conducted “at the request of Nigerian authorities.”

The director-general of media and publicity at the Sokoto government house, Abubakar Bawa, said on Friday that no civilian casualties were reported.

He added that the full impact of the bombardment is still being assessed, pending a report from the joint operations team.

Bawa also noted that objects found near Jabo town in Tambuwal LGA remain unexplained, with Nigerian and US military authorities continuing their analysis.

“Sokoto state welcomes any collaboration between Nigeria and relevant global stakeholders aimed at curbing terrorism and cross-border crimes,” the statement reads.

“The ongoing operations are geared towards securing the state and protecting lives and property.”

The government also highlighted its consistent support for security agencies over the past two years, including providing equipment to combat banditry and terrorism.

Residents of affected areas were urged to cooperate with security agencies by sharing information to sustain ongoing efforts and restore lasting peace.
