Six Killed as Truck Rams RCCG Church in La
Six worshippers were killed at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Epe, Lagos State, on Monday night after a truck carrying sharp sand crashed into the church building.
The incident occurred around 8:30 pm along Hospital Road, shortly after the church’s evening service had ended.
While many congregants had left, some were still inside the auditorium praying or preparing to depart when the heavy-duty vehicle veered off the road and struck the structure.
Residents said the truck lost control while descending the road toward a nearby roundabout.
An eyewitness, Tinu Oduwale, told Daily Post that the driver struggled to stop after the braking system failed.
“The truck was coming down towards the roundabout when the driver suddenly realised the brakes had failed. He kept shouting and honking to warn people,” she said.
Oduwale added that the driver tried to avoid hitting other vehicles and pedestrians at the junction but ultimately crashed into the church.
Another resident, Sanjo, said the victims were caught off guard while still praying. “They had just finished their service. Some people were still inside, praying or getting ready to leave when the truck rammed into the building. If it had happened earlier, the number of casualties would have been much higher,” he said.
Emergency responders confirmed multiple casualties at the scene, while those injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other security agencies carried out rescue operations.
The truck driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the deaths, stating that the truck was unregistered and the driver remains at large.
“The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue, while investigations are ongoing,” she said.
