Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate release of students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU) who were wrongly arrested during the recent protest against kidnapping in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

The governor clarified on Tuesday that the protest was not organised by AAU students, describing it as a criminal act carried out by non-students loitering around the campus to create unrest and exploit law-abiding students.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Patrick Ebojele, Governor Okpebholo made the disclosure during a meeting with AAU Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Osadebamen Ehizogie Michael.

“Intelligence available to us indicates that the incident was orchestrated by a group calling themselves the ‘Ambrose Alli Comrade Community,’ composed of individuals who are no longer students but frequent the campus for unlawful activities.

“Any genuine students who were arrested while order was being restored will be identified and released without delay. We will ensure that any affected students are returned to the SUG President. That is a promise I made,” the governor stated.
