The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ekiti State chapter, has lamented what it described as the worsening hardship faced by its members under the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji.

The union made this known at its New Year prayer meeting held in Ado-Ekiti, where it accused the state government of maltreating pensioners through irregular payment of gratuities, non-remittance of check-off dues, and denial of other statutory benefits.

Speaking at the event, the Ekiti State Chairman of NUP, Comrade Temitope Popoola, said pensioners in the state were currently enduring severe economic hardship, which he attributed to the government’s failure to meet its obligations to retired workers.

In a message titled *“The Agony of Pensioners in Ekiti State,”* Popoola alleged that Ekiti pensioners are among the least paid in the country.

“Many of us are being subjected to untold hardship due to the inability of the government to pay our gratuities as and when due,” he said.

He further claimed that efforts by the union to engage the state government had been frustrated, alleging that some officials had deliberately blocked access to the governor.

“Some people in power have shielded us from seeing the governor. I have written over ten different letters seeking audience with the governor, but all to no avail,” Popoola stated.

The NUP chairman appealed to Governor Oyebanji to intervene by directing those acting on his behalf to desist from what he described as the misuse of government power to promote illegality.

He also accused some government officials of conniving with certain members of the union, who he said had been indicted, to form an association not recognised by law.

Popoola, however, vowed that the Ekiti chapter of the NUP would remain resolute in its struggle for the welfare of pensioners in the state.

“We will not be dismayed. The union will continue to fight for the rights of its members without fear or compromise,” he said.
