Three Fake Naval Officers Arrested in Lagos

The Lagos State Task Force has arrested three individuals who falsely claimed to be officers of the Nigerian Navy, defrauding the public and obstructing government operations.

The spokesperson for the agency, Raheem Gbadeyan, in a statement on Thursday said the suspects were apprehended by the Task Force Chairman, Adetayo Akerele, following a clash linked to the demolition of illegal structures and encroachments on government land in Oworonshoki.

The principal suspect, identified as James K. Robert, allegedly used a fake military identity to intimidate residents and secure advantages.

Gbadeyan said the suspects were caught at the task force office while attempting to retrieve vehicles removed from the demolition site.

“The principal suspect, accompanied by his wife and an alleged orderly, claimed ownership of the car lot at the demolition site and demanded exemption in the ‘spirit of esprit de corps,’” the statement read, adding that Robert ignored statutory notices and repeated appeals to vacate the property ahead of the demolition.

Akerele’s interview with Robert revealed inconsistencies, including improperly worn service ribbons, missing regimental insignia, and a general appearance inconsistent with a senior naval officer.

The task force chairman contacted the Nigerian Navy Military Police, who confirmed that Robert was not a serving officer.

Following verification, Robert and his accomplices were promptly arrested.

Akerele disclosed that the suspects had been under surveillance due to repeated confrontations with task force officers and complaints from residents about someone impersonating a Navy Captain to intimidate people.

The suspect’s wife reportedly admitted she had warned her husband to stop impersonating military personnel, saying, “Several days are for the thief, but one day is for the owner.”

Akerele assured the public that the suspects would be prosecuted by the appropriate military authorities and urged Lagos residents to report suspicious activities.

He added, “No criminal will be allowed to find haven in Lagos State.”
