A 19-year-old unlicensed driver, identified as Nsikak Okon, has been arrested by the operatives of the Edo State Police Command for allegedly knocking down three officers while evading police check.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the incident occurred along Iyekogba Estate Gate, Benin City, the state capital.

The PPRO explained that the suspect drove against traffic, breached a police checkpoint barricade, made a turn and drove back at officers on duty, “knocking down three police personnel, who were on lawful duty.”

The Command’s spokesperson further said that the suspect subsequently crashed into multiple vehicles before he was restrained and arrested.

“The injured officers are currently receiving medical attention,” the statement said.

The PPRO said the black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV, valued N28 million, belonging to the unlicensed driver, was later recovered.

“The motor vehicle, which has been in use since May 2024, was found to be unregistered.

“Items recovered from the suspect include a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing sky-blue liquid suspected to be diluted refnol,” the statement added.
