‘Obsession’: Basiru Backtracks, Admits Wike Holds ‘Power’ In Rivers
The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has revealed that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is being engaged to end the lingering political crisis in Rivers State.
Basiru, who made the revelation on Thursday during an interview on TVC News, admitted that Wike is a critical stakeholder in the present administration.
He said Wike is being engaged to find a solution to the crisis because Rivers State is critical to the success of President Bola Tinubu.
“Wike is an avowed supporter of President Tinubu, even though he is not in the APC. As someone who is interested in the success of President Bola Tinubu, Rivers State is critical for that success.
“He is being engaged to resolve the political crisis in Rivers State,” he said.
OSUN DEFENDER reports that Basiru had earlier asked Wike to resign his appointment and focus on what he described as an “obsession” with Rivers state politics.
The APC scribe in a statement insisted that all members of the APC national working committee (NWC) must accord sitting governors due respect and recognise them as leaders of the party in their states.
His statement came after Wike asked him to stay off Rivers politics.
But Basiru described it as shocking that “such an innocuous statement” could provoke what he called “uncouth responses” from a member of the federal executive council (FEC).
He said records show that Wike is not a member of the APC and therefore “lacks the locus to dabble into the affairs” of the party.
Basiru said as national secretary of the APC, he is mandated to protect the interests of the party and its members nationwide.
